The two most common residential locks in Toronto are Kwikset and Schlage, and they take different key blanks. Here’s how to tell them apart.
Kwikset (KW1 / KW10)
Kwikset keys are usually stamped KW1 (older) or KW10 (newer, 6-pin). The blade is slightly narrower. If your lock says Kwikset or Weiser, you likely need a KW-series blank.
Schlage (SC1 / SC4)
Schlage keys are stamped SC1 (5-pin) or SC4 (6-pin) and have a wider, chunkier blade. Schlage locks are common on condos and newer builds.
When in doubt
Match the stamp on your current key, or bring it in. Ordering the wrong family is the most common mistake — the blade simply won’t enter the lock.
